Human Peer Pressure and Social Fear in Religious Cults

Author: Lance Winslow

Religious cults and even those religions we do not consider cults due to their size often use peer pressure and fear of the individual being outcaste to keep the grouping tight. Although this could be said to be a negative, it is also used in strengthening sports teams, armies and social groups. So it maybe wise to consider all this behavioral hold is used, what it is used for and who uses it before we condemn it use entirely.

Religions often put forth the idea that only someone who is a tyrant, ignorant or stupid would renounce their particular god or gods. Many religions in some form or another state this. Im a Pepper, Hes a Pepper, Shes a Pepper; wouldnt you like to be a Pepper too! Be a Pepper, drink Dr. Pepper! Or All the cool people are switching to Pepsi! All the person has to say is No or I am not cool! However they rarely do and it is for this reason that the tactic works so well. If for instance you do not believe what is being taught, well then the religion pits everyone against you. And people are so concerned about their social status that they will go to lengths to protect their desired pecking order. And yes pecking order is a good use of the phrase here, because this innate characteristic in humans can be seen in Chimpanzee Troops as well.

Well indeed wouldnt that makes sense for religion to label that, which is not one with it, evil or stupid or ignorant. One would suppose this is a good strategy to keep the flock of humans in tight for continued conditioning thru fear and use the social groupings and peer pressures to continue the same. Makes sense for religion to try that tactic. Of course it is your choice to go along with such a notion and your choice if you surrender your mind to such lines of reasoning. Consider this in 2006.
