Mobile Car Wash Performance Expectations

Author: Lance Winslow

Anyone thinking of running their own mobile car wash business or auto detailing businesses have similar questions before they start. For instance they wish to know; How many gallons, on average, to wash a car? This depends on the training of your crews. An efficient team using a 10-horse power Honda Pressure Washer can wash with about 2.1 for cars and 4.2 for SUVs, but I doubt all mobile car wash companies can get this done under such efficiency. Practice makes perfect and being able to conserve water is smart business.

Another common question for future mobile car wash owners is; How many cars can one person wash per hour? Again this depends, as personally I can do an exterior wash in five minutes and other than moving the truck for several hours on end. But not everyone has the technique or stamina for such, so a good rule of thumb would be one every ten minutes with two people. This is providing the cars are lined up and the money is pre-paid which saves time and if and only if the crew is properly supplied. Now then if you add a third person for vacuuming and wax and you can do this while detailing or waxing several cars during the wash visit.

Think of a production line, which floats; a finite capacity scheduling model, in midst of controlled chaos. Think of a McDonalds restaurant where everyone bumps into each other, getting Big Macs, fries, cokes and Mc Nuggets, but it all ends up in the bag properly folded and presented during their $1000.00 per hour lunches. You know? You can hire scum of the earth, lazy, loser, druggies or you can go and hire the entire College Soccer or X-Country team. The money is in the time, not the job. Think on this it will come to you.
