An embroidered badge is a design that has been embroidered on a firm backing, the badge is then applied to clothing by companies or organisations to mark accomplishments, distinguish rank or membership or to identify the company you work for. There are a few different ways in which the badges can be manufactured; they can be done with computer digitization in a factory, using a machine or by hand. The support is provided by the firm backing (the twill) and is ideal suited for using thread (which is ideal for embroidering). There are different threads that can be used with the most common commercially being Polyester and Rayon... Hemp and Cotton can also be used but are less common. There are 3 main types of patches and each are applied in a different manor; Sew-on, Iron-on and Heat Seal are the 3 applications that can be used to apply the badge to the garment of clothing. Iron-on badges simply require the heat from a household iron but the heat seal badges require a specialised professional machine. Both of the heat applying badges work by melting the adhesive and adhere it after it dries. Sew-on patches do not necessarily have to be sewn on like the name may imply (this is the strongest method to attach the badge) however they can also be applied with a fabric glue. Apart from material there are a few other backings that can be used including Velcro, Magnet and Rubber. There are many Badge embroiderers out there, just have a search through a search engine and see what you can find.
